Facebook Might Allow Underage Children Soon
Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg has shown willingness to change age regulations of membership that will allow children younger than 13 years to use the site. According to the report by International Business Times, Zuckerberg acknowledged that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act regulates what information websites can gather on children under age 13 and wants to change this.
According to an online survey of about a thousand adults by Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project, the number of U.S. parents who would allow children 10-12 years old to use Facebook or MySpace has doubled in a year. So there is already a large population of underage children using Facebook.
According another survey by Consumer Reports, almost 7.5 million kids under the age of 13 are using various social networking sites, and surprisingly 5 million of them are under the age of 10. The current age restriction system is not so efficient and children go around lying about their age with nothing to stop them. This could be potentially dangerous as there are cyber-bullies and child predators online.
Besides, time management while using Facebook is something that even most adults face as an issue. For children it could be a bigger challenge as there are many games to indulge in. Also social networking per se for children is too early to begin if Facebook were to allow underage children, but it will definitely save them grace by telling truth about their age.
