Rihanna Tops Billboard Social 50

by Roman Butt - on Jul 27th 2011 - No Comments

For the first time, Rihanna has overtaken all other artists on Billboard’s Social 50 chart, passing Lady Gaga, who has held the spot for some time, and who has since fallen to the #5 spot, now also under Shakira, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.

The chart ranks the most active artists on the world’s leading social networking sites – YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike – using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.

Rihanna who has recently displaced Lady Gaga as the most-fanned female artist on Facebook, coming in at just under 41.6 Million fans, compared to less than 41.4 Million for the high-heeled self-proclaimed “monster” mom. While other artists like to refer to their fans as their army of followers, the Barbados-born singer thanked her fans on the popular networking site with an update calling them her “Navy”.

Overall, Eminem still tops Facebook’s fan count, with 44.2 Million tuning in to his status updates, with Rihanna appearing to be zeroing in on the rap artist.

The Social 50 emphasizes friends/fans behavior above other activities, followed by artist page views and song plays. The final ranking also includes a unique metric measuring the ratio of page views to fans.

FaceNiff App Makes It Easy To Hack Facebook, Twitter And YouTube Accounts From Android Phones

by Admin - on Jun 2nd 2011 - No Comments

FaceNiff is a new Android App that makes it literally effortless to log into someone else’s Facebook account, if that person is on the same Wi-Fi network. Yes, any Wi-Fi network. This application works by capturing all the packets that are sent back and forth inside the network. While the application itself won’t break into Facebook, it will wait for a legitimate user to login, then it will intercept the data and display the user’s login ID. By simply clicking on it, an ill-intentioned user would be able to log in and take over the account. In addition to Facebook, this application supports Twitter, YouTube, Amazon and Nasza-Klasa, a Polish micro-blogging platform.

This App is an elaborate form of packet sniffer, a program that intercepts data that’s sent back and forth inside a network. There are many packet sniffers available online for free, such as Wireshark, a full-fledged Windows application, and more recently Firesheep, a Firefox add-on. The main difference between FaceNiff and other packet sniffers is the program’s ease of use: while most packet sniffers capture every single packet that is sent or received inside the network, unless it’s configured otherwise, FaceNiff was designed specifically for collecting login data. That makes this app a lot less idiot-proof, and therefore more widespread.
There are ways you can protect yourself from these attacks. The most obvious way would be to use HTTPS on public networks, as opposed to HTTP. Services like Gmail, and yes, Facebook, have a setting that allows users to log in with HTTPS. You can also get a free VPN, such as Hotspot Shield, which will automatically encrypt all the data that’s sent from your computer. Both of those measures will shield sensitive data from prying eyes and yes, packet sniffers. If you’re a regular user of public Wi-Fi, stay on the lookout and make sure you’re safe.
In order to use this application, the phone needs to be rooted, which should be fairly effortless for most people. Once that’s done, you can get the application from this website. The developer stresses that this app was made “for educational purposes only” and let’s keep it that way. If you don’t know how to be a responsible individual, you most likely shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a phone to begin with.

Twitter Unveils Photo & Video Sharing

by Admin - on Jun 1st 2011 - No Comments

After years of leaving photos and videos to third-party services like Twitpic and Yfrog, Twitter has finally launched its own version.
“A native photosharing experience will be rolled out to 100% of users over the next couple of weeks,” Twitter CEO Dick Costolo told the D9 Conference.
The service means that photos and videos will be directly connected to tweets. They will be viewable on Twitter.com without having to leave the site. Twitter will also “surface the most popular videos and tweets” in a new section of the homepage, Costolo said.
Users who access mobile versions of Twitter will be able to add photos and videos from their apps soon, according to the official Twitter blog post by Twitter creator Jack Dorsey.
Twitter’s technology partner in the new service: Photobucket. Photos on Twitter will bear the tag “powered by Photobucket,” which will link to a page that allows users to further edit, share or save their photos on Photobucket.
One big question we had about the long-rumored service — would Twitter own the copyright on those snaps? Costolo’s answer was unambiguous. “Users will own the rights to their photos on Twitter,” he said. Twitpic has suffered in the past from ambiguity over its copyright rules.
Here’s Twitter’s official video introduction to the new sharing service.

Twitte app updated for Android Users

by Admin - on Jun 1st 2011 - No Comments

The Twitter app for Android devices has had a minor revamp, bringing some neat new features to the micro-blogging service.
Available to download now for free, Twitter’s official application offers users the option to save attachments in drafts and adds some unspecified bug fixes.
News of the update comes amid widespread speculation that Twitter will be at the forefront of the soon-to-land iOS 5 – the latest iteration of Apple’s smartphone and tablet operating system.
According to unconfirmed rumours, the option to share images to Twitter will be baked into the OS – specifically into the pre-installed camera and video app.
This feature will reportedly be enabled by users logging into iOS with their Twitter details.
Tech types also anticipate that Twitter followers will be synced into the iPhone’s contacts application to bring friends’ feeds into a single location.

Twitter Launches Follow Button for Websites

by Admin - on May 31st 2011 - No Comments

Twitter has launched a Follow button, enabling users to subscribe to the Twitter feeds of companies and individuals directly from their websites with a single click.
Previously, website publishers had to redirect users to their respective accounts on Twitter.com before users could opt to follow them. The new feature will likely encourage publishers to increase the number of “follow us” prompts on their sites, because they won’t have to risk redirecting their audiences off-site.
Users will still be able to preview profiles before opting to follow them by clicking the username next to the Follow button.
Those who are interested in adding the button to their own sites can set one up here.

Twitter acquires TweetDeck for $40 million

by Admin - on May 25th 2011 - No Comments

Twitter has acquired TweetDeck, an application for organizing the display of tweets, for more than $40 million in a mix of cash and stock, according to sources close to the deal.

TweetDeck has been the subject of speculation about deals for months.TechCrunch surfaced reports, citing a $40 million-$50 million acquisition. The deal has yet to be announced, but papers finalizing the deal were signed Monday.

Although Twitter reps weren’t available for comment, the company’s PR account tweeted, “For all those who might be curious, we continue to not comment on rumors.” Betaworks, a key investor in TweetDeck, was not immediately available for comment.

Twitter has been known to either downplay third-party apps or acquire them. In the past, Twitter has scooped up popular Twitter iPhone app Tweetie, and partnered with photo add-on TwitPic as it launched its new interface.

After a management shakeup, with co-founder Ev Williams out and Jack Dorsey back as head of product, the company is focusing on building and owning Twitter’s most compelling features and interfaces.

In February, reports surfaced that UberMedia, the leading developer of apps and Web-based services for Twitter users and other social media platforms, was in talks to purchase Tweetdeck.

But the deal never closed.

Around times of the talks with UberMedia, Twitter suspended UberMedia’s UberTwitter and twidroyd, two popular apps used for mobile Twitter access, citing policy violations.

See Who Unfriend You On Facebook Or Twitter

by Admin - on May 20th 2011 - No Comments

Sometimes we’re all so preoccupied with gaining friends and followers that we’re sometimes missing one of the most important metrics we can use to measure our performance on social media sites – who’s unfollowing us?

While both Twitter and Facebook are all too keen to send us emails and notifications when we gain a follower or friend, there is are no such notifications when someone deems us no-longer worth keeping an eye on – something that can often help us improve the way we interact with people online.

This is where TwentyFeet comes in.

What TwentyFeet does is tie into your Facebook and Twitter accounts (one of each if you’re going for the free service). From here on TwentyFeet will monitor your accounts for when someone removes you as a friend or, in Twitter’s case, unfollows you.

Obviously if you lose a friend on Facebook it’s possible they have jumped ship completely and deemed the network’s odd privacy issues just too much of a sticking point to overcome in order to farm some imaginary fruit but if not, just knowing who they are could help you prevent the loss of more people in future.

TwentyFeet is free for two accounts, with a business account available for just $2.49 per additional social media account.
