Since Apple first introduced the first-generation iPod in 2001, transforming both the portable music player and music industry, the company has sold an estimated 350 million devices.

On Thursday, the company unveiled the latest update to the iPod touch line, and it’s actually a bit of a downgrade: It’s the fifth-generation iPod touch without a rear-facing camera (it still has the 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera) and only two color choices (silver or black). It also has just 16 GB of storage.

Those trade-offs, however, also result in the lowest priced fifth-gen device: $229. The original fifth-generation iPod touch includes two cameras and starts at $299 for the 32 GB model (a 16 GB iPad mini costs just $30 more). Beyond those differences, though, the new iPod touch is identical in features and size (still 6 mm thick) to the full-featured fifth-generation model.

Apple argue that the new iPod touch replaces the fourth-generation iPod touch and noted that more than half of all iPods the company currently sells are iPod touches. Apple had nothing to share regarding sales or changes to the tinier iPod nano.

While Apple doesn’t break out exact holiday sales figures, Apple told us that the iPod touch sold well last holiday season. A recent Nielsen report said 36% of surveyed children wanted an iPod touch for the holidays.

On the other hand, the iPod touch’s broad appeal is clearly shrinking. Last quarter Apple reported that it sold 5.6 million iPods, a 26% drop year-over-year.

Tablets have become the latest product darling of the tech world, but their success is hindering PC growth.

According to the market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), shipments of PC computers are expected to drop by nearly 8% this year, and by 2015 tablets will overtake the entire PC market, including both portables and desktop devices.

Tablets are expected to grow 59% to 229 million shipped units this year, up from 144.5 million last year. The estimation beats out other product categories such as notebooks. But IDC noted PCs will continue to serve a important role in computing, especially among business users.

Although Apple kicked off the tablet trend, low-cost Android devices have also fueled adoption. Prices of most tablets are expected to decline 10% to $381 this year, making consumers even more eager to make purchases. The tablet market has also ushered in more 7-inch tablets, which cost less, and continue to attract more consumer attention. IDC believes the smaller display devices will eventually surpass the 9.7-inch size first made popular by the iPad.

Mozilla is teaming up with a major Taiwanese company Foxconn, to launch a new device running the Firefox OS.

Mozilla has already confirmed the partnership and although the company wouldn’t share the exact nature of the device, it is believed to be a tablet. Mozilla is expected to unveil the plans at Focus Taiwan on June 3.

Mozilla has already signed partnerships with Alcatel (TCL), Huawei, ZTE and LG for Firefox phones but this would be its first tablet initiative.

Foxconn makes most of its money from Apple but is reportedly looking to diversify its customer base. It already makes Android devices but this would be its first foray into the Firefox OS space.

Firefox OS is just one of the class of operating systems vying for a fourth or fifth spot in the smartphone ecosystem. These platforms which also include Ubuntu Touch and Tizen, are primarily targeting emerging markets and first-time smartphone buyers.

A very rare Apple 1 computer sold for a record $671,400 in a German auction on Saturday, according to The New York Times.

The Apple 1 computer is a low-powered PC from Apple’s humble beginnings, which began with original co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. This specific computer that was up for sale at German auction house Auction Team Breker is still functioning. It is reportedly only among six Apple 1s left in existence.

The New York Times reported that the buyer wants to stay anonymous, but is a wealthy entrepreneur from the “Far East.” Saturday’s sale was higher than Auction Team Breker’s recent sale of another Apple 1 that went for $640,000.

The Apple 1 is quite a piece of history from the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, which these days ranks among the most valuable companies in the world.

It was a bank heist for the digital era: No masks, no weapons, no standoffs with police — just a few keyboards and an elaborate hacking plan.

In two sprightly operations, on December 12, 2012, and February 19, 2013, an international team of hackers and thieves stole a collective $45 million from more than 5,000 ATMs across the world. Eight suspects were charged in connection with the crimes on May 9 — still, the complex operation is one that should be understood, if only to better prevent future attacks.

This info-graphic, from fraud detection and prevention firm 41st Parameter, highlights the team’s process — from raising the limits on prepaid debit accounts in banks in Oman to siphoning cash from machines in 27 countries — in colorful detail.

One of the best Jailbreak tweak that i have used is, changed the cellular name on your iPhone/iPod with the help of application CarrierPigeon.

Step 5. Tap on CarrierPigeon and see the options in the application.

Step 6. Here you have three options Enabled, No Carrier, Carrier Name. Tap on Carrier Name to change the cellular name on your iPhone/iPod.

CarrierPigeon Settings

Rather it will totally be a new technology which is basically a hybrid of iPhone5 and 5th generation iPod touch having shape of iPod classic and bottom similar to iPod touch.

The most striking feature of this upcoming new technology is that the user can see its interior from outside. According to reports of Digi Times if this news is true the Budget iPhone 6 will be similar to iPhone 5 in appearance and to iPhone3GS in having plastic casing. The translucent enclosure design is taken from Bondi Blue iMac so that its internal parts are visible to users. This technology has been introduced for the first time in Apple’s iPhone.

Talking about its dimensions Horwitz said that iPhone6 will be half millimeter lager in length and width and one millimeter in thickness then iPhone6. Especially its body will be a source of attraction for its users due to its curves.

Horwitz is of the view that the economical version of iPhone will resemble closely to iPod classic in its shape but differs in material. Unlike iPhone 3GS, the latest one will have curves at start then flat surface. Its SIM jacket will be in center and all other buttons and attachments on flat surface.

Discussing about similarities between iphone 6, iphone 5 and iPod touch. Horwitz said that iphone 6 and iPod touch are similar in a way that both will share same place for their camera, flash and microphone. The reason for resemblance of iphone 6 with iphone 5 is that its headphone port, speaker and bottom microphone are placed on location similar to iphone 5. But the major difference from iphone 5 is the introduction of extra microphone on bottom and four speaker holes which are not present in the former one.

Context of the story is that the upcoming economical head phone of Apple will share its design with three other products of Apple. With iphone 5 from front, iPod touch from bottom and iPod classic from side.

What new in this latest version is much better camera and flash than before, faster processor and lens of 13 mega pixel. All stories about features of this model will come to end as soon as it will be in the user’s hand.

Latest technology going to be introduced in new iPhones is Sharp’s ultra-thin IGZO display. Apple is also planning to introduce this technology in its other products .In fact they have spent 2.3 billion dollars in manufacturing equipment and infrastructure which will create sharp.

Recently, at the 11th Teradata National Information Technology Excellence Awards, 12 Pakistani experts were recognised and awarded for their excellence. Teradata Corporation is considered a global leader in data analytic solutions. Teradata provides companies with that technological advantage that could be place them at a competitive advantage in IT solutions.

The ceremony was attended by the chairman of NADRA and the Consular Economic Affairs of the U.S. Embassy. Teradata has been working in Pakistan with its efforts being recognised within the industry and has contributed toward Pakistan’s growth in information technology sector. The awards recognised IT experts in software development, software export, networking, research and development, IT education, project management, IT media and publication and other IT related themes.

Often these industry awards are seen with skepticism as they are thought to be dependent on what generates more business and which individuals are more favoured over the others. However, regardless of what debate within the industry they might generate, it certainly is good for Pakistan that there is recognition of efforts on part of the individuals who have done their bit to make some progress and development for this country, so matter on how smaller a scale. With each ripple that is caused, a storm of change can be hoped for. This might sound a bit poetic and idealistic, but without a vision, no structure could be built.

The correct IT vision for Pakistan is necessary, and an American company of Teradata has been playing its role toward that despite all the negative news. Even though these are the election times and people are hoping for some real change. But one thing that remains constant during these transitionary period is growth, progress and development.

Pakistan had offered to manufacture these specialised items for Malaysia on large scale that will benefit both the countries and their security concerns.

Malaysian Defence Ministry has expressed its confidence in Pakistan’s ability to deliver on their said offer and on other strategic assets and equipment. Malaysia and Pakistan are both expected to cooperate in joint exercises, training, education and exchange of officers. UAVs are effective for intelligence agencies as piracy, illegal trafficking of goods, people, drugs, illegal fishing can be monitor and caught.

Many intelligence and defence agencies around the world have now started using UAVs for monitoring illegal immigrants, smuggling and other maritime border crimes. Although it has been politically very sensitive amongst different countries to share intelligence with each other during an era which has seen so much spread of violence.

Pakistan is fighting at the forefronts of the War On Terror and yet the U.S. which has better intelligence technology refuses to share it with Pakistan. With the implementation of such technology as the UAVs and satellites monitoring and stopping terrorists and their plots would be helpful. Without invading an individual’s privacy, it is necessary that the government keeps sight of those who are in the midst of the people to create chaos.

The Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan is also planning to establish a National Materials Science Research Institute that will have a centralized supercomputing facility for computational materials science or condensed matter physics. China controls 97% of the world’s market for rare earth elements. Pakistan has been gifted with rare earth elements by nature, which are critical in manufacturing components of high technology products. These rare earth elements can be used in textiles, coatings, electronics, and sensors besides other things.

According to Pakistan Council of Science and Technology (PCST), Pakistan needs a thorough research in all classes of materials, including hard and soft materials, metals, inter-metallics, organic and inorganic semiconductors, polymers, composite materials, biomedical materials, and vitreous materials. It is necessary that modern techniques are used in characterization of materials and understand their properties and uses.

There are different universities in Pakistan that offer Masters and PhD degrees in the field of materials science and there are many laboratories that operate in the same field, but there are no dedicated research institutes in this area of study at the national level. The National Materials Science Research Institute will also serve as an interface between academic institutions and industry needs.

Trained personnel are also required who are expert in this field of materials research and science. Such industrial sectors as ceramics, plastics, metallurgy, aerospace, telecommunications, transportation, electronics, micro and optoelectronics, energy, healthcare, computing, consumer goods and construction will benefit thoroughly from research studies of materials science research institute.

These technology parks will have affiliations with relevant universities in their respective regions and will provide platform for multidisciplinary research and will be accessible to all researchers. These technology parks will be established under the National Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) Policy 2012, which is being taken as the definition policy that will govern Pakistan’s course of action and strategy for the development of science, technology and research.

In the previous years, there had never been a definitive science and technology policy in Pakistan unfortunately. The projects to be undertaken under the ST&I Policy 2012 are being checked for their feasibility and their financial allocation will be requested accordingly on a yearly basis. The national centres are also expected to be established for research and development. The funding for Pakistan Science Foundation will also be increased significantly that will then be helpful in executing many of the planned and necessary projects.

There will also be a connection made between the science and technology with the market sector to make research and production more relevant to the needs of the country. The same will be for the technology parks development. All of this will help Pakistan’s economy get stronger and be strengthened.

There is no denying of the fact that science, technology and development are closely interlinked. Instead of being dependent on expensive imports of technology, it is rather essential to be independent by promoting scientific learning in Pakistan.

<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-14735" alt="C Square Consulting (Pvt.) The All World Network’s Arabia 500 Awards is an international body that gives recognition to fast-growing private companies in the field of information and technology that do well in the areas of creating jobs and in creating opportunities for entrepreneurs around the world. The Pakistani IT firm that won the recognition was the C Square Consulting (Pvt.) Ltd.

According to the CEO of All World Live, Anne Habiby, C Square Consulting has been competing on a large scale at the global level maintaining quality in its information technology services. This is what makes a company a winner in their point of view and hence, they gave the award to the company. The Arabia 500 Awards are regarded very highly within the industry and by most entrepreneurs around the world as they have operations in more than 100 countries. They look for effective information technology companies in the Middle East, North Africa, Pakistan and Turkey that also provides companies from these areas a global recognition in their field.

Awards should never be the aim, but only an encouragement to strive for something even better. It means that what they have been performing is the right way to go and improvement can never stop. It is wonderful to see a Pakistani information technology company from the private sector getting this recognition.

This also proves that there are many individual success stories that happen every day in Pakistan, but what need to happen are some more national stories which are positive for the country’s growth and image. Pakistan has the potential to provide in every field and this should be recognised too.

Recently, a one-day seminar on ‘Nanotechnology and Stakeholders in Pakistan’ was held in Pakistan that was organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with Preston Institute of Nano Science and Technology (PINSAT) and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) from Canada. The Secretary of the ministry, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar was the main guest speaker and he stressed on the importance of nanotechnology.

According to the secretary, it is important that Pakistan considers developing nanotechnology manpower with proper strategy. Although, he talked about seriously taking nanotechnology, but without a planned strategy toward developing skilled professionals in the field of nanotechnology, there is no use of lip-service.

It often happens that seminars and conferences are often organised with the help of foreign private institutes and foreign governments’ aid for research and development in the third world countries, but with little “seriousness” from the government itself. The funds are wasted and the corruption takes over with incompetence as well as dislocation of funds.

For a field like nanotechnology, which is expected to have a market share worth $3 billion for its products, it is in fact fatalistic not to pay attention to the opportunities of growth. In Pakistan, only 0.6% of the gross domestic product (GDP) is spent on science and technology altogether which can be compared to neglecting to provide the basics for development and progress.

In the coming seven years, it is expected that the government will raise this GDP to 2% expenditure by 2020, which means still no serious efforts on part of the government with many more such seminars and conferences, besides much talk and articles written on the subject, about paying due attention to science, technology, innovation, invention, creativity and communications.

Other countries, including Bangladesh, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, UAE, Egypt, UK and Japan will also be taking part at this international event. The Air University in Rawalpindi will organise a robotics competition between various universities across Pakistan on February 6 in its Islamabad campus.

Through this national robotics competition, the winning team will get the opportunity of representing Pakistan in the grand finale. The event has been arranged by Air University’s assistant professor, Liaquat Ali Khan and will be also leading the team at the final event in India. All Pakistani universities offering degree programmes in engineering and computer science have been invited to participate at the national competition.

It is expected that at least 10 different universities will compete to make it to the final representing Pakistan. There will be two categories in the national robotics competition where competitiveness of the participants will be judged, one is of International Autonomous Robotics Competition and the other is International Robot Talent.

Robotics deals with designing, construction, operation and application of various types of robots that serve different purposes. The computer systems to control them, sensory feedback and information processing makes it all the more difficult and interest for creative enthusiasts. With the advancement in robotics, many places where humans used to work have now been taken over by robots making it cost-effective and quick. However, there are many tasks where a super-human ability like that of a robot is required and that is where it serves the best.

The orientation ceremony of the Information Technology University of the Punjab (ITU-Punjab) was held under the supervision of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) in Lahore on January 24. The university will be an addition to the opportunities in pursuing careers in the field of information technology. The first campus of the university was established on the sixth floor of Arfa Karim Software Technology Park.

It is expected that the university will contribute toward providing solutions of problems of information technology in Pakistan and will work toward achieving global standards to compete in the international market. The standards are being set in education, research, entrepreneurship and also creating personnel capable of being hired in the field of information technology companies and businesses.

Already Pakistan is lagging behind in the field of latest technological development. Even though companies do work, but that work of latest technology and its applications remain limited to only a few companies which adopt modern means and upgrade to newer software relevant to their sectors.

The guest speaker was Dr. Umar Saif, who is also the Chairman of the PITB. On the occasion, he said:

“The launch of the IT University is a visionary step towards providing the youth quality IT education. ITU’s mission is to educate the next generation of innovators and engineers to develop technologies that drive the country’s economic growth.”
