Samsung is overtaking Apple in smartphone sales

by Roman Butt - on Jul 25th 2011 - No Comments

The Korean Electronics Manufacturer, Samsung might have surpassed Apple and Nokia in smartphone sales in the second quarter of this year.

Samsung has made of one of the most popular phones of the year in the Galaxy S II. Neil Mawston, an analyst at Strategy Analytics told Bloomberg that Samsung might have sold more smartphones than Apple and Nokia during April, May and June.

Mawston said, “Samsung is estimated to have sold between 18 million and 21 million smart phones globally in the April-June quarter, compared with 16.7 million for Nokia and 20.3 million iPhones“.

The possible total of 21 million isn’t solely Galaxy S II models, in fact we’re still wondering if Samsung knows how many of those it has sold after much confusion over its pre-orders and sales figures. Samsung has yet to launch the Galaxy S II smartphone in the US.

If we include basic phones into the equation Mawston reckons that Samsung will have 20 per cent market share compared to Nokia’s 26 per cent. If this prediction comes to fruition then it would be the smallest gap in phone shipments between the two firms to date.

Samsung also makes budget smart phones such as the Galaxy Europa and Galaxy Mini. These phones bring Google’s Android operating system to consumers who can’t afford a pricey contract tariff or whopping SIM free payment.

In terms of market share, we have recently learned that Apple has overtaken Nokia. Figures from IDC showed Apple with 21 per cent market share compared to Nokia’s 20 per cent. According to IDC, Samsung had 14 per cent.

iPhone 5 is in production – Target of 25 million phones is set by end of the year

by Roman Butt - on Jul 7th 2011 - 1 Comment

Apple suppliers have begun producing the next generation of iPhone, possibly iPhone 5 which is expected to be released in September. The smartphone will be thinner and lighter than last year’s iPhone 4 and possibly include wireless charging or micro-USB.

Digitimes, a Taiwan-based electronics newspaper, reports that Pegatron, a major Taiwan-based notebook maker, has received orders for 15m “iPhone 5″ or “iPhone 4S” devices to be shipped in September, based on reports from upstream suppliers to the company. It suggests that Pegatron has been building CDMA phones which would be used on the Verizon network in the US and some Asian carriers. Most iPhones sold at present are GSM rather than CDMA, which was only introduced in January.

The phone would have been launched in the summer but for delays in production, though that does not chime with the schedule for the release of iOS 5.0, the latest update to Apple’s mobile operating system which was announced at its WWDC conference in June but will not be available until September.

Apple may include “a new way of charging the phone”. That could imply wireless charging like that used by the HP TouchPad tablet, which uses an induction system to recharge the battery.

Alternatively, it might mean that Apple will follow the EC regulations introduced last year which mandate the use of a micro-USB port for charging: “In response to citizens’ demand for a common charger, the Commission invited manufacturers to agree on a technical solution making the chargers of different brands compatible,” said the EC’s press release last December. “As a result, world leading mobile phone producers committed themselves to ensure compatibility of data-enabled mobile phones, expected to be predominant in the market within two years, on the basis of the micro-USB connector.”

Taiwan-based Hon Hai, which owns the Chinese manufacturing company Foxconn, is the world’s biggest contract manufacturer of electronics by revenue. Apple uses it to assemble products, as do companies including Acer, Amazon, Asus, Dell and Nokia.

Data from comScore released on Tuesday suggested that Apple had gained an extra 3 million iPhone users in the US between February and May. Digitimes reports that Pegatron had expected to sell 10m CDMA iPhone 4 devices earlier this year, but in fact shipped less than 4m in the first quarter.

Upgrade to iOS 5 Beta 2 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

by Admin - on Jun 24th 2011 - No Comments

As expected, Apple released iOS 5 Beta 2 today to all registered developers, making this the second release of iOS 5 released publicly. While it’s still clearly months away from completion, Beta 2 includes several bug fixes and enhancements, including improved battery life on all devices.

All developers are urged to download this update as soon as possible, in order to submit accurate feedback to Apple, as well as develop their future Apps for an updated platform. If you’re not an authorized developer, don’t update to Beta 2 yet, since it seems to fix the workaround to skip the activation process, which we reported on earlier this month.
Since this story is still developing, it’s as of yet unclear what’s new in this build.
Becoming an authorized developer, however, has no particular requirements, other than a free Apple ID. Any user can purchase a subscription from Apple’s Developer Connection site for $99, as well as an additional $99 if they wish to have access to Mac OS X Betas as well. We must say, however, that a developer subscription, as the name implies, is aimed at developers, or at least people who are used to trying out experimental software. Bugs are expected, maybe even some major ones.
iOS 5 was released earlier this month at WWDC, Apple’s annual developer-targeted conference. Among many of the new features present in this release, the most prominent include a new to-do system known as Reminders; enhancements to Mobile Safari; iMessage, a new exclusive instant messaging client for iOS users; and a built-in set up wizard, eliminating the need for a computer connection in order configure the handset. You can read more about the new iOS on our write-up.
If you have jailbroken iOS 5, stay away from this update, since it’s likely to plug the vulnerability that allowed the jailbreak in Beta 1. A new method will likely be available within the next couple of weeks, although expect frequent updates until the final version of iOS 5 is released, which is planned for sometime this fall.
What are you waiting for? Launch iTunes (be sure you’re using version 10.5) and install this update. It’s wonderful to see iOS 5 come together. We’ll tell you about improvements in this build as we come across it. Meanwhile, be sure to update your devices.

US Army Chooses Android Over IOS For First Smartphone

by Roman Butt - on Apr 26th 2011 - No Comments

Not all the things revolves around Apple and the iOS platform it would seem as the word is when it comes to picking a mobile operating system for the US Army, The Military has chosen to ignore Apple and iOS in favour of Android.

It’s really no surprise the US Army opted for an Android phone over an iPhone. Android phones allow the US Army to build its own specific hardware and not rely on a company like Apple for system-level improvements.

Although apparently security is still a major concern that has to be resolved, and although still a long way from being a final device, it does appear that the US Army has decided that the Android Platform is the way ahead as the “Mobile/Handheld Computing Environment” is expected to run on numerous devices.

Also, a sleek design style doesn’t seem to be a priority for the army as troops need smartphone hardware that can take a beating, which a phone like the iPhone, or even current Android phones like the HTC Thunderbolt, don’t seem capable of. The prototype Joint Battle Command-Platform currently weighs in at two pounds.

One thing worth to be noted that while the US Army is currently testing Android as its smartphone OS of choice, Resources states that could change. However, given Apple’s relatively closed IOS ecosystem, it’s hard to imagine the US Army choosing Apple’s platform over other smartphone OS makers.

Smart Phone OS Smack down

by Roman Butt - on Feb 2nd 2011 - No Comments

Google Android Vs. Windows Phone 7 Vs. IOS:

The iPhone and Google Android devices had a lot of time to improve their UIs and features. So, they are very mature than the newly arrived Microsoft’s WP7. Microsoft came up with a totally new user interface for the Windows Phone 7.

Android
Android UI is all about Widgets, Gadgets and customizable icons. Android pushes users to create their own custom home screen experience. Users can place apps and widgets on these home screen panels on their own choice. Android lets users access content from apps without actually launching them via widgets. The apps just run in the background updating a widget, no user interaction required. You’re creating a dashboard, or heads up display, filled with the most important content. You don’t need messing around with the app list.
Windows Phone 7
Microsoft launched its Windows Phone 7 few months ago and the unique UI is creating a stir. Even though the app ecosystem is smaller right now, Microsoft seems to have put some thought into how users will use their apps. Microsoft’s commercials make it clear they are going for glance able information, as opposed to tapping around endlessly in apps. From the home screen design, it looks like Microsoft is banking on people not needing all that many apps at hand constantly. Windows Phone 7 will excel at business – Microsoft won’t turn its back on its cash cows.
IOS
Apple’s IOS made its name with apps. It was the platform that showed us what a well-crafted mobile application could do to improve the experience. As such, the IOS user interface is all about reminding users that they have apps. The entire home screen is just a scrollable list of apps. The message here is that you have apps, and you should probably use them.
Features Comparison
It should be noted that Microsoft has promised that Flash Support and Copy/Paste functionality will be patched in soon after launch but as of now, it will still be indicated as “Not supported” under WP7.Also this comparison includes Android’s Froyo 2.2 features, which is the latest stable available version and off course IPhone’s 4 ver.

Which OS is the best?

If we see above comparison, we’ll come to the conclusion that IOS and Android are mature enough to give all the necessary features, a smart phone is needed. So, any layman can easily choose the best between these two OS according to his own demands. For example if he needs Flash and Java support, Android is suited to him, on the other hand, if he wants iTunes and more apps, then IOS is the best option.

Windows phone 7 is a new player, it is hot, slick and has several interesting features to take on IOS, Android and other top mobile phones OS. But at this stage it lacks various important features, as shown in the above comparison. We hope in future it’ll give tough completion to other OS devices.
