Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Launched the Country’s First Commercial Tablet, eBook Reader and Notebook

by Sidrah Zaheer - on Feb 9th 2012 - No Comments

Both Apple and Samsung have established themselves as leading tablet manufacturers, but others are also making their way to cater to their own countries customer with affordable prices and better suitability. India has pioneered to locally manufacture Akaash, which is considered to be the world’s cheapest tablet. Recently, Pakistan has also planned to develop a similar product with tablet and digital notebooks to be the first in line to be manufactured.

The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Kamra in collaboration with the Chinese company Innavtek have planned on commercially introducing these electronics in Pakistan. The first three products produced by PAC are a computing tablet, a notebook and an eBook reader. The responsibility to manufacture these products lies with PAC, whereas Innavtek will be looking after marketing and promotion. As of now, the products are available in Rawalpindi, but after some finalization they will be introduced in Lahore and Karachi too.

This is not just good news for Pakistani technology, but also for Pakistani tech enthusiasts who are into using gadgets for personal or professional purposes. These products come with a joint one-year warranty of PAC and Innavtek and there will also be a backup support as mentioned by the official from PAC. There are further plans to train professionals into manufacturing these products both in China and Pakistan soon, if the results are successful. It is about time each Pakistani gets a tablet and a notebook in his and her hands and not just a mobile phone.

Fold-up car of the future unveiled for Europe

by Roman Butt - on Jan 29th 2012 - No Comments

A tiny revolutionary fold-up car designed in Spain’s Basque country as the answer to urban stress and pollution was unveiled Tuesday before hitting European cities in 2013.

The “Hiriko,” the Basque word for “urban,” is an electric two-seater with no doors whose motor is located in the wheels and which folds up like a child’s collapsible buggy, or stroller, for easy parking.

Dreamt up by Boston’s MIT-Media lab, the concept was developed by a consortium of seven small Basque firms under the name Hiriko Driving Mobility, with a prototype unveiled by European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso.

Demonstrating for journalists, Barroso clambered in through the fold-up front windscreen of the 1.5-metre-long car.

“European ideas usually are developed in the United States. This time an American idea is being made in Europe,” according to the consortium spokesman Gorka Espiau.

Its makers are in talks with a number of European cities to assemble the tiny cars that can run 120 kilometers (75 miles) without a recharge and whose speed is electronically set to respect city limits.

They envision it as a city-owned vehicle, up for hire like the fleets of bicycles available in many European cities, or put up for sale privately at around 12,500 euros.

Several cities have shown interest, including Berlin, Barcelona, San Francisco and Hong Kong. Talks are under way with Paris, London, Boston, Dubai and Brussels.

The vehicle’s four wheels turn at right angles to facilitate sideways parking in tight spaces.
The backers describe the “Hiriko” project as a “European social innovation initiative offering a systematic solution to major societal challenges like urban transportation, pollution and job creation.”

“World’s First Spherical Flying Machine” Can Land and Fly Almost Anywhere [VIDEO]

by Admin - on Oct 26th 2011 - No Comments

The sci-fi classic Star Wars: A New Hope features a famous scene in which Luke Skywalker practices Jedi Lightsaber skills on a small, flying sphere that can hover and move quickly in any direction. Now, Japan’s Ministry of Defense has developed what may be a precursor to the Jedi training ball, though they call it a “Spherical Flying Machine.”

Driven mostly by remote control, the 42-inch in diameter, 350 gram flying ball uses a combination of propellers and wings to hover, fly in all directions at up to 60km/h and even move along the ground and walls. Virtually nothing seems to stop the ball from “flying”.

According to Japanese ministry officials who recently demonstrated the flying ball this week at a DigiInfo Expo Conference in Japan, the sphere uses the propeller to lift off and land and the wings for lift as it flies forward. The secret sauce may by the sphere’s three gyroscopic sensors, which automatically right the ball when it’s on the ground or in the air. In the video, the ball lands and starts rolling around (thanks to the propeller). When it’s time to lift off, the gyroscopes help the ball position itself so the propeller is up top. There’s also a camera inside the sphere.

The Ministry of Defense built the robot to help them solve a problem. Apparently they’ve built aircrafts that can stand up vertically after flying horizontally, but take-offs and landings were difficult. Researchers then came up with the idea of a sphere as a potential solution. They then built this prototype with off-the-shelf parts for roughly $1,400. It’s unclear if the ministry plans on commercializing the flying sphere, but they do see some potential in the design. During the video the demonstrator notes the flying sphere will be able to reach places that were previously hard to access by air.

For now, though, future Luke Skywalkers may have to wait a while before they can start learning some Jedi tricks from a Japanese flying ball.

Sony lowers the price of the Playstation 3

by Admin - on Aug 19th 2011 - No Comments

The Japanese electronics giant Sony announced on Wednesday, August 17, a decline in the price of its consoles PlayStation 3 (PS3) in Japan, the United States and Europe.

In Europe, the model with a 160 gigabyte hard drive will be sold against 299 and 249 euros in the United States, 249 against $ 299 (172 against 207 euros). Versions have a 320 GB hard drive will benefit from lower rates similar to be offered for 299 euros and 299 dollars. “Historically, we see that our lower prices lead to increases in sales and we expect the same thing this time, ” said Jack Tretton , head of PlayStation in the unit Sony U.S. , the Reuters news agency.

This decrease in the price of the PS3 comes a week after the publication of sales figures of new games in July, which reached their lowest level in nearly five years, according to the specialist retail NDP. This decision could therefore benefit as retailers, video game publishers like Electronic Arts and accessory manufacturers. “One can imagine that the entire industry regains confidence ” , says analyst Jesse Divnich .

With this decision taken at the show Gamescom Cologne , Sony also hopes to draw a line under the matter of piracy PlayStation Network (PSN), which had paralyzed the online services group in the spring.

Handheld consoles, STRATEGIC SECTOR

By lowering its prices two years after the launch of a thinner version of its home console, Sony also plans to compete with Microsoft, maker of the Xbox 360. According to data from the site VG Chartz , the two groups are neck and neck, around the world. Microsoft has sold 55 million Xbox and Sony PS3 52 million since 2006. Nintendo continues to lead with more than 87 million Wii sold worldwide. For Sony and Microsoft, the United States and Europe remain areas where competition is the front.

With the increased competition from smartphones, one battlefield to the home of Sony handheld. With DS, Nintendo has added almost 150 million users. But after sales of its new version, 3DS, considered lackluster , Nintendo had to lower the price of its console. For its part, Sony announced this year in Europe, a new version of its handheld console, the PSP, thinner and less expensive (99 euros). According to VG Chartz, Sony has elapsed so far nearly 70 million units of its laptop in the world. But the biggest challenge remains the Sony PlayStation Vita, next-generation handheld console, the output of which was postponed to early 2012, Europe and the United States.

Following the announcements of the Japanese, the title listed on Sony New York finished down 1.8% Tuesday and the action ended down by 0.76% Wednesday in Tokyo, a Japanese market down to 0, 55%.
