When Anne Hathaway also reflected back to her experience at hosting 2011’s Academy Awards with James Franco she had mixed views. They were the youngest celebrities ever to have hosted the show. Their performance received negative reviews with harsh criticism across the whole US media. According to the reviews, Hathaway appeared unnecessarily excited that gave a tinge of overacting and Franco looked bored to death and unserious about his performance.
In his defense Franco said when asked about it that he might be having a “low energy” but he asserted, “I honestly played those lines as well as I could”. Hathaway termed her experience as “several different experiences”.
“There was the critical reaction, which was awful. Then there are the people who have been coming up to me since then who stop and say, ‘I thought it was fantastic. I watched it with my family and we were entertained.’ I am very grateful to those people. And then there’s my memory of it – which is, whether it was great or whether it stunk, who knows? I still got to walk out on the Kodak and see those people and someday I`ll get to tell my grandkids about it.”
Though, Hathaway did a better job of hosting, but lacked reciprocity from her co-host Franco that made the overall hosting for Oscar awful. This year, which will be the 84th time Oscars will be presented, the ceremony will be hosted by Billy Crystal, who seems like a reliable choice for AMPAS when no one else fits the bill.
